Healthcare Careers Academy
High school seniors in Ottawa County can kick-start their careers in healthcare through the Healthcare Careers Academy (HCA). This program equips students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to enter the healthcare field immediately after graduation.
During the first semester, students complete state-approved training that includes STNA (State Tested Nursing Assistant) certification, Elder Care, Phlebotomy, and more. They also learn to use medical equipment, such as blood pressure cuffs and gauges, and gain familiarity with basic medical terminology.
In the second semester, students participate in a hands-on cohort experience, working directly with healthcare professionals to apply their skills in real-world settings. Upon completing the program, students earn state certification, enabling them to work in various healthcare environments, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and clinical laboratories.
“It opened my mind to the career opportunities in healthcare. I thought it was a narrow tunnel, but I realized there are multiple careers. I job shadowed in several departments, and it was eye-opening.”
