OTTAWA COUNTY CAREER SHOWCASE

The Ottawa County Business Advisory Council hosts the Ottawa County Career Showcase event each year at the CMP Competition Center at Camp Perry. The event brings in over 500 9th grade students from school districts throughout the county. Students are challenged to engage in activities with the exhibitors in an effort to help students explore the skill sets necessary to obtain careers in Ottawa County. Businesses normally present a number of engaging activities for students including donning/doffing PPE, safety relays, athletic training and physical therapy challenges, pipefitting races, team building exercises, CNC and robotics operations, chemistry experiments and more. This year, the career showcase will be held on Friday, October 7th.

PARTICIPATING EMPLOYERS

This event brings in 20-30 employers each year. Previous employers include Bay Point Resort, Magruder Hospital, Northern Manufacturing, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Gypsum and much more. If you have never participated in the event before and are interested, here are a few things you need to know:

1. This is not a job fair. We encourage you to talk about all of the jobs your company offers and even pass out job applications, however this event is specifically targeted towards keeping students engaged and attracting them to your business.
2. Please plan to have an activity prepared for the students. You don’t want to just talk and hand out flyers. Students will stay engaged with your booth by providing a fun activity, related to your business, so they remember you when you’re hiring.. “oh yeah, that boat knot activity at Bay Point was cool and so were those employees. I should apply for a summer job.”
3. Be prepared for a lot of kids. There is a morning and an afternoon group of students. Each group will be split into colored stations of 4. Those 4 stations will rotate 15-20 minutes roughly. Light snacks will be provided throughout the day. Employers will get a 5-10 minute break when the groups are switching from morning to afternoon.
4. Your time commitment is roughly 8AM-2PM. Setup can be done the day before or the morning of the event. We ask that employers be ready to go before 7:30AM.
