JOB SHADOWING EXPERIENCE
Ottawa County students have access to job shadowing opportunities through local employers. Job Shadowing is a type of on-the-job training that allows an interested individual to follow and closely observe an employee performing a specific role. Students who participate in a job shadowing experience will receive a Job Shadow Completion Certificate and can list this experience on their resume. To receive the certificate, a submission form is required to complete afterwards and includes what the student enjoyed, what the student found challenging and a photo of the student during the job shadowing experience.

FAQs (frequently asked questions)
The first step is to speak with your career readiness coordinator or school counselor. They can help you choose a local employer to intern and help you with completing the Job Shadowing online form, which you can find at the bottom of this page. You will need to provide your email, your parent/guardian email, career readiness coordinator or school counselor email, and the employer’s email. After you submit the form, you may start your job shadowing experience. There is no “waiting for approval” period. You are responsible for setting up the date and time with the employer/employee you are job shadowing.
As much as we would like to say yes, students cannot job shadow family members. Job shadowing an employee of a local business will give you the opportunity to experience something new – this includes stepping out of your comfort zone and meeting new people.
Your job shadowing experience can be done after school, during school, or on a weekend. A full job shadowing experience would be one full work day – 8 hours long. Depending on the employer, you can job shadow a full 8 hour day or even split it up and do 4 hours in two days. You can do multiple job shadowing experiences, not just one. Summer job shadowing experiences are not available, however we encourage your to visit ohiomeansjobs.com and take a look at summer job opportunities.
A student who participates in a job shadowing experience is not paid and no school credit is received. Students who participate will receive a Job Shadowing Completion Certificate and will be able to add this to their resume under their work history or volunteer experience.
