The Ottawa County Safety Council and the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) is hosting the first TRU Safety Conference on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 from 8:30am to 3:30pm at the Catawba Island Club.

TRU stands for Teach, Review and Understand safety – this includes all aspects of safety such as mental health and wellness. The purpose of this conference is to provide our safety council members, as well as area employees, with valuable information that addresses accident prevention in the workplace and raises awareness among employees for a healthier safety culture.

Special Guest: Jay Berschback | Chief Meteorologist with 13abc Action News

 

Attendees will participate in an hour long talk featuring Jay Berschback, Chief Meteorologist with 13abc Action News who will speak on Extreme Weather Preparedness.

Weather, specifically severe weather events and natural disasters, are some of the top threats to businesses in 2023, and the growing emphasis on weather preparedness is less of a trend and more of a necessity. These events are increasing not only in frequency, but also in severity. Jay will speak on how to foster psychological safety and mental health within your team, and ensuring that your workplace is safe.

Soul Stretch Yoga, Soul Stretch Cycle and Root to Rise Wellness Cafe

Yoga is a practice that connects the body, breath, and mind. While modern media and advertising may have us think that yoga is all about physical poses, the entirety of yoga includes a wide range of contemplative and self-disciplinary practices, such as meditation, chanting, mantra, prayer, breath work, ritual, and even selfless action. For the first 30 minutes, hear from Rose on the benefits of practicing yoga from stress relief to improving your mental health. Afterwards, you’ll participate in 30 minutes of energizing yoga poses including standing and balancing poses.

Violence in the Workplace

Understanding the types of workplace violence and their causes is a fundamental step toward prevention. Workplace violence can range from verbal threats and harassment to physical attacks or homicides. It can arise from conflicts between employees, issues with management, or incidents involving outsiders, such as customers or visitors. Tim will discuss a pragmatic approach to workplace violence and bullying prevention. As a former law enforcement professional, Tim shares his extensive knowledge and experience in handling human aggression.

LIVE DEMO | Electrical Safety

Spark Force One Electrical Trailer

Spark Force One is a safety training display that travels throughout the state educating people on how to stay safe around electricity. The demonstration includes miniature power poles, live wires, and a transformer, in addition to a mini car, a squirrel and other items that can disrupt power or pose a safety threat when confronted with electricity.

Health Hazards of Silica Exposure

Crystalline silica is a common element found in the Earth’s crust and is contained in many materials because of this. Breathing in very small crystalline silica particles, causes multiple diseases, including silicosis, an incurable lung disease that leads to disability and death.  Don will talk about the health risks associated with inhaling crystalline silica dust, including the development of silicosis, lung cancer, and other respiratory diseases.

Ignoring water hazards can have dire consequences such as injuries, including brain damage, and electric shocks. Learn about emergency response planning for water-related emergencies, understanding the dangers of water, knowing when to be weather-wise, and required boating safety equipment.

How Hot is Too Hot?

Exposure to extreme heat can result in occupational illnesses and injuries. Heat stress can result in heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes. Heat can also increase the risk of injuries in workers as it may result in sweaty palms, fogged-up safety glasses, and dizziness. Hotter days are around the corner and in this session, Phil will discuss the prevention of heat stress, precautions when working in outdoor and indoor environments, personal risk factors, and how to tell if someone is under heat stress.
